Memantine (Axura) treatment of Alzheimer‘s Disease

Memantine (Axura, Akatinol) an NMDA antagonist that is postulated to reduce excitotoxicity in the brain, was found to be helpful for Alzheimer's disease in a study published in April 3rd, 2003 issue of New England Journal Of Medicine.

In this study Memantine was well tolerated without any major adverse effects. The medicine is yet to approved by the FDA for clinical use in the US. It has been available in Germany for the treatment of advanced Alzhimer's disease for more than 10 years.
A new drug application has been filed with the FDA by Forrest Pharmaceutical in Jan 2003. A decision is expected by the end of theyear 2003.
Scientific Medical Research - Genetic Study of Alzheimer's Disease
We currently use this medicine on compasionate basis for patients who have not responded to standard treatment and have had a rapid decline.

This use of the medicine is not currently part of a study. Patients taking the medicine are expected to get the medicine from Germany on thier own, be seen in the office by a neurologist and neuropsychologist at least quaterly and must undergo periodic blood testing and a physical examination.

All patients have to be accompanied by a legal guardian who consents to the treatment. If further information is required please contact the office by phone for an appointment.
